Commissioned by the Equine Reproduction Center of Central Florida, this double swing door isn't just an entryway; it's a personalized tribute to the special bond between a mare and her foal.
The journey began with a simple picture – a snapshot of a beloved mare and her foal, captured in a moment of playful connection. This image, sent by the client, served as the inspiration and the blueprint for our design. From this, we developed a detailed sketch, translating the essence of the photograph into a design suitable for carving.
But translating a two-dimensional photograph into a three-dimensional carving presented some unique challenges. The photo, while capturing the essence of the moment, lacked the depth and perspective we needed to truly bring the horses to life in wood. We spent hours studying the photograph, sketching different angles, and even researching equine anatomy to ensure accuracy and realism in our carving. The foal's playful stance, in particular, was tricky – we wanted to convey its youthful energy without making it appear unbalanced. Through careful measurements and adjustments to our design, we were able to capture the perfect sense of movement and lightness.
From this initial sketch, we embarked on a collaborative journey with the client. They were deeply involved in the process, sharing their insights and preferences every step of the way. We discussed the wood selection together, ultimately deciding on African Mahogany for its rich color and durability. They even visited our workshop which allowing them to see the progress firsthand and offer valuable feedback. Their passion for their horses was infectious, and it fueled our dedication to creating a truly special piece. One memorable moment was when the client pointed out a small detail in the photo – a slight nick in the mare's ear – and asked if we could incorporate it into the carving. It was a tiny detail, but it spoke volumes about their connection to their animals, and we were happy to oblige.
